Does RingCentral text back a missed call?
The short version: yes, it can, and no, it is not a switch you flip. You build it in Workflow Builder, which RingCentral describes as "included free for RingEX and RingCentral Video customers". The confusing part is that the current template gallery has no missed-call template, so the usual route is importing a shared recipe. RingCentral’s own product manager has documented three gaps in it, the biggest being that a call reaching voicemail does not fire the trigger at all. Here is the whole setup honestly, and then what BeepBack does behind a RingCentral line for $79 a month flat.
Where the setting actually lives
Workflow Builder is RingCentral’s automation tool: pick a trigger, add conditions, attach an action such as sending an SMS. On RingEX and RingCentral Video plans it is already sitting in your account. A missed call is one of the events it triggers on; sending a text is one of the actions it takes. Put the two together and you have missed-call text-back, built by you.
Finding it is where people get stuck. The template gallery holds six templates as of July 2026: out-of-office, keyword-based and after-hours auto-replies, a voicemail auto-response, a voicemail notification, and an SMS help request. None is a missed-call auto-response. What exists instead is a recipe, which RingCentral’s documentation defines as a workflow "exported by another user and shared with the community" that you import as a custom automation and edit. A live RingCentral support page still tells you to click a "Missed call auto-response tile", so what you see may depend on which document you followed. If that tile is not there, take the recipe.
Why the templates went away, and what that does not mean
In January 2025 a RingCentral product manager wrote on RingCentral’s official community forum: "We removed missed call automation templates because of the risk it creates for customers." The risk he named was a carrier one: carriers can revoke a business’s SMS access if automated messages reach people who never consented. That gets mangled in both directions, so be precise. RingCentral did not remove missed-call text-back, and anybody telling you it can no longer be done is wrong. The recipe still exists, and staff were pointing customers at it as recently as May 2026. What went away was the pre-made template.
The three gaps, from RingCentral’s own product manager
All three come from the same person, in the same place.
Voicemail does not count as a missed call. In his words, a call that goes to voicemail "will not trigger the missed call event in Workflow Builder." This is the one that matters, because voicemail is where real missed calls land. If your line rolls to a greeting after four or five rings, which is how nearly every business phone is configured, the automation you spent an afternoon building may fire on almost nothing. Test it with your own cell before you trust it with a customer.
Phone menus are not covered. Missed-call detection at IVR menus is "not supported at this time", per the same product manager. If your callers press 1 for service and 2 for billing before any handset rings, that is a hole in the coverage rather than an edge case.
It is per extension and per queue. Missed-call events fire at the queue extension level, so you configure this once per extension and once per queue, not once for the business. One line and one owner is fine. Three departments and two queues is the same build five times, and five things to remember the next time somebody reorganizes the phone tree.
What the texts cost you
Automated replies come out of the same bucket your team texts customers from. RingCentral’s own service attachment states that "Core/Advanced/Ultra tier RingEX plans include a monthly allotment of 25/100/200 SMS, per user respectively." That is 25 a user a month on Core, and an auto-reply plus a follow-up on every unanswered call eats into it faster than it sounds. RingCentral lists a Business SMS Booster add-on at "$25" on its pricing page as of July 2026. We are not quoting RingEX base plan prices, because RingCentral does not publish them; every figure in a listicle is a third-party guess.
The second cost is registration, and it lands on you whoever you buy from, us included. Per RingCentral’s own announcement, since 3 February 2025 "aggregators operating on behalf of US mobile carriers began enforcing the blocking of unregistered outbound SMS traffic." Before RingCentral submits your registration it wants a working website, an EIN, a privacy policy carrying SMS disclosures, and SMS terms, and it says approval "may take up to four weeks to be approved." The only question is who fills out the paperwork and who chases it.
A note on AI Receptionist, since it always comes up
RingCentral will show you AI Receptionist when you search this topic. It reached general availability on 30 June 2025 and is listed at "Starts at $39" on RingCentral’s pricing page. Be clear on what it is: it answers the call. If it picks up, the call was never missed, so no missed-call text is involved. RingCentral also announced AI Receptionist Everywhere in February 2026, which attaches to a phone system you already have by call forwarding, at $59 a month including 100 minutes. Neither is an answer to the question at the top of this page.
Running BeepBack behind a RingCentral line
Forwarding an extension to an external number is officially supported in RingCentral, from the app and from the Admin Portal, and that is the entire integration. Nothing ports, nothing moves, and the calls nobody picks up hand off to BeepBack. It texts the caller back in your business’s own name, from a dedicated number registered to your business, and the word BeepBack never appears to a caller. It asks what the job is, how soon it has to happen (1 = emergency/today, 2 = this week, 3 = just a quote), where the work is, and who to ask for, so what reaches your phone is a sorted lead, not a missed-call badge. We handle the carrier registration, verification usually takes about two weeks, and you are not charged until your number is live. Pick up the call and nothing sends. $79 a month flat, no contract, no setup fee, no per-text charges, no per-user seats.
Now the caveat, and weigh it before you change a setting: once a call forwards out to an external number, that caller can no longer leave voicemail in your RingCentral mailbox. You are trading one for the other, not stacking them. For most trades that trade is easy, because a thread that names the job beats a message nobody plays until 8 PM. If your voicemail is load-bearing, though, if transcripts feed a process or you have to retain recordings, that is a genuine cost and it belongs in your math.
One piece of housekeeping: if you keep the RingCentral recipe switched on too, turn one of the two off, so your caller gets one conversation instead of two.
Side by side
| Building it in RingCentral | BeepBack behind RingCentral | |
|---|---|---|
| What you set up | Import the shared missed-call recipe into Workflow Builder, then repeat the build per extension and per queue | One call-forwarding rule on the line, set to fire when a call goes unanswered |
| Calls that reach voicemail | A call that goes to voicemail "will not trigger the missed call event in Workflow Builder", per RingCentral’s product manager | The call forwards on no answer, so the conversation starts. The caller can no longer leave RingCentral voicemail |
| Calls that hit a phone menu | Missed-call detection at IVR menus is "not supported at this time", per the same product manager | You forward from whichever extension the call finally rings on |
| What the caller gets | Whatever single message you wrote into the recipe, then a person has to take it from there | A conversation: the job, the urgency, the address, the name, then a lead ranked by how soon it has to happen |
| The texts | Drawn from the RingEX allotment, "25/100/200 SMS, per user" by tier per RingCentral’s service attachment; Business SMS Booster listed at "$25" | No per-text charges and no per-user seats. Volume is included |
| Carrier registration | Yours to file: working website, EIN, privacy policy with SMS disclosures, SMS terms. RingCentral says approval "may take up to four weeks to be approved" | We file it and chase it. Usually about two weeks, and you are not charged until your number is live |
| Price | Workflow Builder is "included free for RingEX and RingCentral Video customers", on top of whatever your plan already costs | $79/mo flat for the business, no contract, cancel anytime |

When you should just build it in RingCentral
Plenty of readers should close this page and go build the recipe, and we would rather say so than sell you something you do not need. If your calls genuinely ring out instead of rolling to voicemail, if you run one extension rather than five, and if your text volume fits the allotment you already pay for, build it yourself. The tool is free with RingEX, and $79 a month on top for the same outcome would waste your money.
Three more cases where we are the wrong answer. If somebody sits at a desk and answers your phone all day, you do not have this problem. If AI Receptionist or a live answering service already picks up, you do not have it either, because the call is never missed. And if voicemail in the RingCentral mailbox is part of how your office runs, external forwarding is the wrong shape, and the recipe fits you better despite its gaps.
Where BeepBack earns its keep is the shop where the phone rolls to voicemail while both hands are busy, where nobody is watching an inbox at 2 in the afternoon, and where what you need to know is not "someone called" but "no heat, today, 88 Grant St, ask for Rosa." Before you talk to anybody, run last week’s missed calls through the calculator. If most of them were robocalls, it will say so.
