BeepBack Research

Counted, not quoted.

The statistics that get passed around in this industry trace back to nothing that holds: no study at all, a document that doesn’t contain them, or a paper its own author retracted. So we run our own: real fieldwork, full-trace audits, exact numbers, the full methodology, and the limitations stated on the page.

Studies publish here when a dataset exists, never on a calendar, and each one stays at a permanent URL so you can cite it with a link.

Desk study · The Oversize Audit

1.15x to 6.54x the flow the modern method computes.

We ran eight typical homes and apartment buildings through both published pipe-sizing methods. Hunter’s 1940 fixture-unit curve specifies 1.15x the modern peak demand figure for a one-bath starter home, 2.23x at the median, and 6.54x for a 100-unit building: the gap grows with building size.

Desk audit · The Folklore Audit

0 of 9 statistics survived the trace.

We followed nine of the industry’s favorite missed-call statistics back to their sources. Three trace to no study at all, three are credited to documents that don’t contain them, two come from one white paper its own author retracted, and one is a vendor’s own survey whose evidence has vanished.

Field study · The NJ Plumber Phone Test

1 in 6 answered the phone.

We called 133 New Jersey plumbing shops during business hours, most of them twice. A person ever answered at 23, about 1 in 6, and 32 of the 133 listed numbers were dead.

Citing this work

Every study page carries a suggested citation, its sample construction, and a limitations section, because a number without its method is folklore. Quote the figures exactly as published, with a link to the study page.

Methodology questions: hello@getbeepback.com. Data is collected by Sena Engineering LLC, the company that builds BeepBack; results are aggregate and anonymized, and no study names a business we called or tested.

Somewhere out there tomorrow, a phone rings at 2:14.
