Forward missed calls from a VoIP line or landline
BeepBack connects to your existing number with conditional call forwarding: calls you answer ring through like always, and only the calls you don’t pick up roll to your BeepBack texting number instead of voicemail. On a cell you dial a code (those codes are here). On a VoIP number or a landline there’s no code to dial; the same setting lives in your provider’s portal, and it takes a few minutes once.
VoIP: the setting to look for
Every provider names it a little differently, but you’re looking for the same thing: call handling for unanswered or missed calls, sometimes called “forward when unanswered,” “no-answer call handling,” or “if I don’t answer.” Point it at your BeepBack number and save. Don’t use “forward all calls”: that would stop your phone from ringing at all. The wrong setting is easy to spot, because your phone goes silent.
- Sign in to your provider’s admin portal.
- Find call handling / call forwarding for your business number.
- Choose the unanswered or no-answer rule, not “forward all.”
- Enter your BeepBack number (the app shows it during setup) and save.
- Set the ring time to about 20 seconds, three or four rings, if your provider asks.
Where the setting lives, by provider
Menu names change over time, so treat these as what to look for rather than an exact click path. When in doubt, each provider’s help center has the current steps.
- RingCentral: under Call Handling & Forwarding for the number, set the after-hours or “when unanswered” rule to your BeepBack number. Help center.
- Google Voice: its forwarding is limited and doesn’t cleanly hand unanswered calls to an outside number, so if Google Voice is your main line, email hello@getbeepback.com and we’ll find the best setup with you. Help center.
- Vonage: look for Call Forwarding or Follow Me and add a no-answer destination pointing at your BeepBack number. Help center.
- 8x8: in Call Forwarding Rules, set the “when unanswered” rule to your BeepBack number. Help center.
On any other provider, the same three words find it: unanswered call forwarding.
Landlines
A classic phone-company landline usually has busy/no-answer forwarding as a line feature. Some carriers let you set it with the same dial codes cells use; others enable it from their side. One call to your phone company with the words “busy/no-answer call forwarding” and your BeepBack number gets it done. If you’d rather not deal with them, email hello@getbeepback.com and we’ll set it up with you.
How to check it worked
Call your business line from another phone and let it ring out without answering. The missed call shows up in your BeepBack dashboard the moment it happens, and the app’s setup checklist confirms the forwarding test for you. If nothing appears:
- Confirm the rule is on the right number and set to unanswered calls, not busy-only.
- Check you saved the rule; some portals need a separate confirm or publish step.
- If your phone stopped ringing entirely, you picked “forward all”: switch it back to the unanswered rule.
Forwarding on is not the same as live
One honest expectation: once forwarding is on, your missed calls start appearing in your dashboard right away, but the text-backs themselves begin only after the phone carriers finish verifying your business, usually about two weeks, sometimes longer. Carriers verify every business that sends texts; that check is why your texts land and your number doesn’t get flagged as spam. Finishing this step doesn’t skip the wait, and you’re not charged until you’re live. The number doing the texting is registered under your own business’s name, not ours.
Common questions
Which setting do I pick? The one for unanswered or no-answer calls, sometimes labeled “if I don’t answer.” Point it at your BeepBack number. Avoid “forward all,” which sends every call away and stops your phone from ringing.
Will my phone still ring? Yes, as long as you set the unanswered rule and not “forward all.” Calls you answer ring through normally; only the ones you don’t pick up roll to BeepBack instead of voicemail.
My phone stopped ringing entirely. What happened? You set “forward all” by mistake. Change the rule back to unanswered or no-answer only, and your line will ring again.
I have a landline, not VoIP. Landlines usually offer busy or no-answer forwarding as a line feature. Some accept the same dial codes cells use; others enable it from the carrier’s side. One call to your phone company asking for busy/no-answer call forwarding to your BeepBack number does it.
